Coal traders want the state government to issue unused challans from the last auctions in May and November so that the mineral can be transported and sold legally ahead of the Christmas holidays.
The president of the Meghalaya People Coal Trader Welfare Organisation, John Frankie Rymbai, today issued a press release saying that traders want the government to sanction the movement of coal and, to do so legally, should issue coal challans.
Illegal coal mining and transportation is a massive problem and causes losses to the state exchequer, though the government has continually played down the scale of the issue.
