Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today inspected ongoing construction of several large infrastructure projects in the New Shillong Township.
Accompanied by officials from the Planning and Urban Affairs Departments, the CM visited the construction site of the new Secretariat at Umsawli.
The new structure is being constructed at a cost of Rs 1,188 crore, with completion set for mid-2027. Work has commenced in full swing, following the foundation-laying ceremony on January 21.
“This iconic building will lay the foundation for an active administration and its design has been thoughtfully conceptualised to incorporate aspects of sustainability and culture with modern architecture,” said Sangma. “I eagerly look forward to its completion.”
Upon completion, the site will not only become an administrative city but also contribute significantly to decongesting Shillong, with the current Secretariat situated in the heart of the state capital.
The CM noted that several internal roads in the NST have been completed, while others are ongoing. The road communication network in the administrative township will connect various iconic projects in the area, enhancing overall connectivity with Shillong.
Sangma also inspected the ongoing construction of the ‘Unity Mall’. During his day-long visit, he visited the completed Ummir to Mawkhanu Road, one of the roads connecting to the Administrative and Knowledge City in the township area. He discussed the proposed avenue plantation along the road to improve the overall aesthetics of the surrounding area.
Earlier in the day, Sangma inspected the newly built Polo Mall under the Smart City Project. The work on the shopping mall is complete and the process of renting/leasing out shops is underway. The mall features spaces for entertainment, a food court and shopping and commercial areas.
While inspecting the infrastructure development work for the nearby Wahumkhrah Riverfront Development Project, the CM emphasised the project’s importance, considering environmental aspects, the ongoing beautification of the city and hosting of the National Games in 2027. The project entails developing infrastructure at the riverfront and cleaning up the river.
“I am hopeful that we will complete Phase 1 of the riverfront at the earliest,” he said. “In Phase 2, the area will be developed to accommodate shops, eateries, parking spaces, hostel accommodation and more.”
The CM urged citizens to join the government in maintaining the cleanliness of rivers like Wahumkhrah. “We will work together to achieve our common goal,” he said.
