Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today told reporters that opposition MLA Ardent Basaiawmoit’s fears that a heavily indebted Meghalaya could be forced by the central government to concede to uranium mining are hypothetical.
“These kinds of hypothetical scenarios creating fear and confusing people is not the right way to move forward,” Sangma said.
The idea that the state could find itself in such a position is ludicrous and does not arise, he added, while suggesting that Basaiawmoit might have drawn parallels from what is happening between Ukraine and the USA and applying it to Meghalaya and India respectively. The CM said that the central government has put rules in place as to how much debt states can take on and these are strictly followed.
“There is a practical way and if they (the opposition) have a problem with the loan aspect we will clarify,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the scenario that Basaiawmoit painted will never happen.
