Shillong, Sep 30: Days after teachers of ad hoc schools in Meghalaya staged a protest demanding that the state government implement their demands, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has invited them to the negotiating table.
The Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) has been holding a sit-in at Malki Ground since September 22.
Informing reporters about the development today afternoon, FASTOM vice-president Sanborn Jungai said that the meeting will be held at the CM’s official residence on Wednesday at 3pm and he expects the talks to be fruitful.
Jungai said that he received a phone call at 4pm today from Commissioner and Secretary of the Education Department, Vijay Mantri, informing the teachers of the invitation for talks.
The FASTOM vice-president said that the teachers will stick to their demands for upgrading the ad hoc schools to the deficit system, which would increase the educators’ salaries.
Jungai also said that if the government decides only on enhancement of their pay, then FASTOM may have to protest again next year.
