A conglomeration of pressure groups in the Chokpot area today conducted a spot inspection and closed down stone quarries that they have complained about on several occasions.
The NGOs described the quarrying of stone as “illegal”. This issue “has been raised time and again by us on several occasions and have also lodged a complaint to various concerned departments, the local MLA as well as to several ministers”, including the Chief Minister and Tura MP.
But all this has apparently fallen on deaf ears as “no attempt was made to stop such work in the area.”
The pressure groups said that the quarrying is being done close to the Dareng River, which is a lifeline for the people in and around Chokpot.
Today, the NGOs took matters into their own hands and erected makeshift barriers to seal the area off.
