Shillong, Mar 24: A child at a prestigious city school had his admission cancelled after he turned up late during the orientation programme, according to court documents.
The parents have moved the High Court of Meghalaya over the matter, calling the school’s decision high-handed and a violation of fundamental rights under the Constitution and a setback for the kindergarten child’s early education.
The case goes back to the end of last year when St Edmund’s School granted the boy admission to their KG section. The child’s parents submitted the required forms and paid the fees, according to the court synopsis.
However, due to an illness at home, the parents missed a notification that an induction programme would be held on December 13. The child only attended after the parents received a phone call on the said day from the school.
Fast forward to February this year and the school, without so much as a show-cause notice, according to the boy’s parents, cancelled the admission, or rather ruled that it “stood forfeited in accordance with admission guidelines.”
The case will next be heard on April 2.
