The Union Ministry of Home Affairs is keeping a close eye on the tripartite peace talks between the state and central governments and the outlawed Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed today that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is very keen that the peace talks are taken to a logical conclusion. He added that the discussions are on and the groundwork is currently taking place.
Stating that it is difficult to talk about the peace talks, Sangma said that a number of meetings at an unofficial level have taken place. Certain leaders of the militant group were even guaranteed safe passage in order to lay the groundwork here in Shillong.
“Some time has been sought to get some things in place and certain procedures to be followed,” the CM said. “The process is on but it’s not a government programme or government meeting or normal discussions that are taking place where we just say ‘let’s meet tomorrow’ and we can meet tomorrow. It’s a lot of preparation that goes into all of this, a lot of background work that needs to be done and a lot of pre-discussions.”
