The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has written to the Director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department over the illegal transportation of cattle into the state.
Recently, the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO), of which the HYC is a part, intercepted an Assam-registered courier truck (AS11 7779), at Byrnihat illegally transporting cattle.
In a letter to the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, the HYC stated that on June 30, HYC members apprehended one courier truck transporting nine cattle in a small and congested space.
“On being asked, it is also learnt that the persons transporting the animals have no requisite documents for an inter-state transportation and also no certificate from the concerned authority of the State whether such cattle are fit for human consumption,” the pressure group stated.
According to the HYC, the mode of transportation is also in contravention of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, the Transport of Animals Rules 1978 and the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.
In the letter to the Director, the HYC stated that it failed to understand as to how such kind of transportation of animals is being allowed inside the state without following the due process of laws.
