The Khasi Jaiñtia Bus Association (KJBA) today protested against the reported move of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) to bring about alteration in Ïew Mawlong lot stating that it would to further congestion the parking lot.
Members of the association including the tourists association also obstructed the labourers for carrying out construction works at the site as a mark of protest.
“This is not acceptable. The parking lot caters to all vehicles from the rural and urban areas and the people know that this is one of the most congested parts in the city. Therefore, any further alteration will aggravate the situation and bring about chaos,” tourist association president R Lyngdoh said.
Lyngdoh said there are over 200 vehicles stationed at the parking lot each day from all the districts of the Khasi Hills.
The associations said the matter is not new as they had approached the municipal board urging it to stop any further construction in the area.
KJBA general secretary Wanboklang Kharsati said works at the parking lot started in August.
“We had approached the chief executive officer of the municipal and placed our valid reasons why we are opposed to alterations. But today it appears that they have not taken our reasons into consideration but gone ahead with the construction works,” he said.
