Personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) rescued 31 buffaloes that were “brutally crammed” into trucks on New Year’s Eve along the international border in East Khasi Hills.
It was the intention of smugglers to transport the cattle into Bangladesh. However, acting on a specific tip-off, the BSF personnel confiscated the trucks on the Ichamati-Shella Road near the border.
The buffaloes “were found crammed inside two trucks and tethered mercilessly in a pathetic condition,” a BSF press release stated. On seeing the border guards approaching, the truck drivers fled into the forest.
Over the course of 2022, the BSF in Meghalaya seized 3,308 cattle that were being smuggled.
Meanwhile, on the same day, the BSF seized cosmetics worth Rs 8.5 lakh along the international border in East Jaintia Hills.
