Personnel of the Border Security Force’s (BSF) 4th Battalion nabbed three persons travelling in a vehicle that was carrying a large quantity of sugar meant to be smuggled into Bangladesh.
The BSF acted on a specific tip-off to make the seizure and arrests yesterday.
The vehicle was carrying 1.6 tonnes of sugar near the international border in West Jaintia Hills. It was heading towards the Muktapur border area when intercepted by the border force.
All three of those detained by the BSF are residents of Amlarem, according to a BSF press release. It was there that the sugar was loaded in a pickup truck.
The border guards have seized more than 2 lakh kilogrammes (200 tonnes) of sugar since last year. These smuggling attempts are down to the comparatively high cost of sugar in Bangladesh.
The suspected smugglers from yesterday and the seized items were handed over to Customs officials in Dawki for further action.
