Residents of Garo Hills’ border areas are victims of organised crime, much of which goes unreported, Tura MDC Bernard Marak said in a statement today.
“Victims of such crimes should come forward without fear and report to the nearest police stations so that justice can be served,” Marak said.
Recently, there was a double gangrape committed on two minor girls in South West Garo Hills where the perpetrators are believed to have crossed over from Assam.
Marak appreciated initiatives taken by the Assam Chief Minister and police department in nabbing the suspects. The Assam CM and Marak both belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
According to Marak, the miscreants who committed the crime are suspected to be residents of Salmara district who came to the area where the crime took place with ill intentions and targeted young tribal girls.
The tribal population living on the borders in Garo Hills are being taken advantage of by organised gangs due to a lack of security.
“Meghalaya police have arrested some of the culprits and the hunt is on for others who are supposedly taking shelter in Assam and beyond,” Marak added.
