The opposition to the blockade of trucks carrying limestone to Bangladesh through the Majai Land Custom Station on Monday nearly took a violent turn.
The blockade was called by the Majai Dorbar Shnong on May 4 after a standoff with authorities of Hima Sohra over the dilapidated road condition in that area.
On Monday, there were allegations that people from Sohra came down to Majai to confront the residents and both parties nearly came to blows before police intervened.
The Dorbar Shnong had claimed that even though the Hima Sohra collects Rs 400 as toll fee per truck carrying limestone to Bangladesh the road has still not been repaired.
The Secretary of Majai Dorbar Shnong, Daminot Sohtun, said that the road is so bad that during the winter they have to breathe dust and in the rainy season it becomes muddy, making it impossible for the residents to walk through.
Sohtun also said that ever since Hima Sohra took over the export of limestone into Bangladesh at least 19 volunteers from Majai Dorbar Shnong who were involved in streamlining the movement of the trucks into Bangladesh were relieved from their jobs.
The Secretary said that even though the trucks pass through the Majai area there is no revenue for their Dorbar Shnong.
He said that the demands of the residents of Majai is not new even as he informed that last year a letter was written to the Syiem of Hima Sohra but he did not pay heed.
Sohtun said that since May 4 the residents of Majai had started the blockade but there was no trouble until some persons came from Sohra on Monday when a scuffle nearly broke out.
