The Labang Nangphyllut Pangam Raliang Area Committee (LNPRAC) from Block-I area today asked the State government to hold an emergency meeting with Assam for setting up of a Joint Action Committee comprising both the states and the Centre.
The representatives of the LNPRAC who met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today to submit their memorandum, highlighted how atrocities against the Khasi Pnar people have continued since Assam took control of their area in 1951 and attached them to Karbi Anglong.
Referring to the annex agreement signed with the Central government, LNPRAC adviser Laborious Manik Syiem said as per the agreement the land belonging to the Khasi states should be within Meghalaya.
“What happened in 1951 is an act of aggression by the Assam government against the Khasi democratic set up as the residents were attacked with Karbi Anglong without any prior consultation with them,” Syiem said.
“We have submitted a memorandum to the chief minister highlighting the plight of the people. The documents which we have show that Labang, Nangphyllut, Pangam, Raliang are part and parcel of Meghalaya,” he added.
According to Syiem, while the boundary talks are ongoing between the two governments, the people of the area continue to suffer with Rangbah Shnongs and youth leaders being beaten up by Assam authorities.
Demanding that the area be reattached to Meghalaya, he said, “Our government should immediately hold a meeting with Assam with all the evidence that we have. We do hope we will prevail in this matter.”
“The chief minister has assured us at the meeting that all out efforts will be made to bring back what is part of the State’s history,” Syiem informed.
