With no polling stations of their own as Block 2 is still disputed between Meghalaya and Assam, voters from the 18 villages there will have to travel to other villages to cast their ballot on Friday, the day of the general election to the Lok Sabha in Meghalaya.
With a view to ensure a smooth voting process, residents of Block 2 have appealed to the Meghalaya government to bolster security measures on polling day.
Speaking the reporters, Blik Sohtun, president of Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Border Area in Block 2, emphasised the need for enhanced security and patrolling during polling day to safeguard voters’ rights as enshrined in the Constitution.
Sohtun stated that residents are compelled to travel to Mawlasnai, Khyndewso, and Thadrang polling stations to cast their votes. He underscored the importance of deploying adequate police forces and security personnel to ensure the safety of voters, particularly those traveling from different areas of Block 2, and to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
The extra security is required in case miscreants or those with vested interests take advantage of the situation to cause trouble for voters. Despite assurances from the government regarding election security, residents remain vigilant to prevent any attempts to undermine the electoral process.
