The youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) of Cachar district in Assam, filed a complaint with Silchar police today over the banners put up by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) in Shillong two days ago.
The complaint, signed by BJYM Cachar President Amitesh Chakraborty, names KSU President Lambokstar Marngar as responsible for causing “panic” among the non-Khasi, specifically Bengali-speaking, population of Meghalaya.
Chakraborty added that the KSU “tried to create disharmony in the country, not specifically in Meghalaya, but also in the entire country” by putting up banners that said that “all Bengalis of Meghalaya are Bangladeshis and they need to leave Meghalaya”.
He said that Bengalis, as well as Hindi-speaking people and Nepalis have been living across the North East since the times of the British Raj and that “strict action should be taken with immediate effect as per the laws of our country so that this sort of event, which has been happening since 1979 almost on a yearly basis mostly during the season of Durga Puja, Diwali [up to Christmas] should not happen in future.”
