On the 189th death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded national recognition for the freedom fighter and asked the central government to install his portrait in Parliament.
The party also repeated its request that the Postal Department release a stamp commemorating Tirot Sing’s martyrdom at the hands of the British. A stamp was issued back in 1988 but simply carried the freedom fighter’s image and name.
The BJP also wants more of Tirot Sing’s story told in history textbooks in the country, “so that his sacrifice inspires coming generations in the state and across the nation,” a press release stated today.
The state unit of the saffron party held a commemoration ceremony at its Shillong headquarters today, with numerous senior figures present. Other units observed the death anniversary in their own locations, including at Tirot Sing’s native Nongkhlaw.
BJP members paid floral tributes at Tirot Sing’s statue at the State Central Library campus here and conducted a cleaning drive in the city.
