The internal fissures in the State BJP have come into the open with BJP leader and cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai warning against any move to change the State party president ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections.
It may be mentioned that BJP national vice president in-charge of Meghalaya M Chuba Ao has a few days back asked Meghalaya BJP president to “gracefully step down”. Ao also said that Mawrie has done enough damage to the party in the State.
A section of BJP leaders are also working all out to get Mawrie removed from the post of State party chief.
However, Shullai who is close to Mawrie is strongly opposed to any move to change the party president.
“Mawrie should be allowed to complete his term and a change of president at this point of time is nothing but suicidal for the party,” Shullai said today.
Shullai also said that Mawrie has stood by the party and that he has lifted the morale of party workers in Garo Hills.
The South Shillong legislator said that he has spoken with Chuba Ao and will also take up with other central party leaders and request them not change the State BJP president at this crucial juncture.
“Since the time is limited, a change of State president at this hour is too late and that it may trigger a collapse with party workers and leaders resigning en masse as reorganising the party at this short time will not be possible,” Shullai warned.
He also supported the stance of Mawrie that the party ticket for the 2023 Assembly polls should be given only after a close scrutiny and survey of candidates.
Shullai said that the infighting and groupism within the party should end immediately if BJP has to cross the “double-digit” mark in the upcoming elections.
