Shillong, May 9: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has followed the Voice of the People Party (VPP) in urging the state government to appoint Idashisha Nongrang as the next Director General of Police.
Nongrang is currently the Director General of Meghalaya Civil Defence and Home Guards. She is one of three officers in line for the job when the incumbent DGP, Lajja Ram Bishnoi, demits office on May 19.
She is also the only one of the three candidates whose names were approved for consideration by the Union Public Service Commission who is an indigenous tribal; the other two are Ram Prasad Meena of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Deepak Kumar of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Speaking to reporters today, state BJP chief spokesperson and former police officer Mariahom Kharkrang said, “Nongrang is best suited for the post, considering she is the senior-most officer amongst the recommended names and has vast experience of working with Meghalaya Police. Her upright nature and commitment to duty is well known. As a direct consequence, she commands unparalleled respect amongst the officers and men of the force.”
The BJP feels that, being born and brought up in Meghalaya, Nongrang has a better understanding of the various intricacies and cultural nuances of the state.
