Barely a month after it was inaugurated, the Bailey Bridge across the Dwar Ksuid along the Shillong Bypass in Ri-Bhoi district has developed ‘technical defect’ prompting the district administration to suspend traffic movement through it.
This was informed by Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, RM Kurbah in an order passed under Section 144 CrPC to stop vehicular movement today.
“Traffic movement through the Bailey Bridge will be suspended immediately to avoid any untoward incident till the rectification of defects is completed,” Kurbah said.
She said this is done in interest of public order and for safety of road users as well as the bridge and road pavement in the area in particular and the district in general.
However, vehicles weighing within 10 MT only are allowed to ply through the concrete Dwar Ksuid Umroi Bridge, the order said.
The 230 feet Bailey bridge is a temporary structure with a capacity of 40 MT built to cater to heavy vehicles and the loaded trucks passing through the Shillong Bypass.
Constructed by the BRO after the State government had consulted with the NHAI to come out with a temporary alternative to facilitate movement of loaded trucks, the bridge was inaugurated on March 25, 2021.
