Shillong, Jan 28: The two-day Tyisam Festival kicked off in Baghmara, South Garo Hills, today.
Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira inaugurated the event, accompanied by local MLA Kartush R Marak and other dignitaries.
Shira expressed his delight in participating in the festival, comparing Baghmara’s Simsang Beach to Chennai’s Marina Beach, noting that Baghmara’s sand area is larger. He encouraged locals to promote domestic tourism, highlighting the potential of Simsang Beach to boost the local economy.
The festival features various events, including flower and vegetable shows, singing and dancing competitions, indigenous games, beach sports and musical nights with performances by North Wind, Rough Road and local bands. The event showcases the region’s rich cultural heritage, local cuisine, music, handicrafts and other local produce, a release stated.
