A one day awareness programme on solid waste management, ban of single use plastic and its ramification was held today at the Market Complex in Nongstoiñ.
The programme was organised by the District Swachh Bharat Mission Urban in collaboration with the District Administration and Seng Samla New Nongstoiñ, West Khasi Hills.
Senior Environmental Engineer of the State Pollution Control Board WR Kharkrang who attended the programme as the resource person highlighted issues relating to the proper waste disposal, effective waste management system and plastics uses which is a danger threat to the environment.
He spoke about biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste can and their uses. He also stressed on the need of cleanliness especially in the markets and urged people to follow guidelines for systematic and scientific disposal of waste.
Kharkrang further called upon every citizen to move forward with participative approach for better management of waste.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, M. Diengdoh explained about the importance of community participation in segregation of waste which should start from one’s own family. He also stressed on the ill effects of plastic to surroundings and the need of coordination by the general public in making the area free from plastics.
