A conservancy truck shed, an excavator and refuse compactor have been added to the assets of the Jowai Municipal Board (JMB) in its bid to keep the town, which was overflowing with garbage, clean.
The shed was constructed under Grant in Aid Capital Asset 2020-2021 while the excavator and refuse compactor were procured under 15th Finance Commission 2020-2021, the CC flooring under the 14th Finance Commission 2020-2021. All the assets amount to Rs 1. 13 crore.
Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla lauded the JMB for its service rendered especially during the pandemic. He said waste bins have been distributed to each household in town for segregation of waste and urged residents of Jowai Town to work in collaboration with the board.
Deputy Commissioner Batlang S Sohliya shared his experience with the Shillong Municipal Board and said that waste management is not complicated. He said it only needs changing of people’s mindset and collective work to achieve cleanliness. “To reach the goal we need to start it from home, as waste generators we must reduce as much as possible the amount of waste generated from our home,” he added.
Chief Executive Officer of the board, B.Blah thanked the ‘Keep Jowai Town Clean’ partners for working hand in hand with the JMB in creating awareness amongst the public with regards to segregation of waste.
She mentioned that besides the waste collection the board has undertaken many developmental works in different areas. Informing that from the 14th Finance Commission the JMB has constructed the internal road opposite the Deputy Commissioner’s office from the 15th Finance Commission Award Basic Grant, she also said that 24 work order have been issued to different localities out of which 17 have been completed.
Blah further informed that 74 work orders have been issued for construction of Individual Household Toilets (IHHL) out of which 57 have been completed. The board also undertook construction of in-situ nallah treatment for filtering and treating 11 outfalls that drain the different localities to river Myndtu.
Besides these the office have also implemented the welfare scheme through DAY-NULM, by formation of SHG and receiving a revolving fund Rs. 10,000 and subsequently other funds, a Self employment program where 30 beneficiaries have received loans within 2 lakhs each. It also supports street vendors through PM Svanidhi scheme to 30 beneficiaries for first installment loan at Rs, 10,000 each.
She further informed that the JMB has also conducted awareness in all localities and in 17 schools. The awareness program will continue in schools, market areas and localities.
At the programme, the Keep Jowai Town Clean –Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment, Young Minds Collective (YMC), Bharat Scout and Guide, Synjuk ki Waheh Shnong were also felicitated with mementos and individual certificates of appreciation. Bins were also distributed to educational institutions.
JMB chairman, L. Lakiang and JHADC chairman Dr. Sankey Shangpung also put forward their concern with regards to garbage in Jowai and called for cooperation from the public to keep the town clean.
