Shillong, Oct 10: Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Thomas A. Sangma is attending the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference, which commenced on October 5 in Bridgetown, Barbados.
Sangma is accompanied by Malthus S. Sangma, Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Aurelius Warlarpih, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Speaker, Daman D.K. Rymmai, Deputy Secretary (R) and Dilip Syiemiong, Personal Assistant to the Speaker.
The week-long Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), which will conclude on October 12, brings together more than 600 delegates from over 180 national, state, and provincial legislatures across the Commonwealth. The event, hosted by the Parliament of Barbados and the CPA Barbados Branch, is being held under the overarching theme, ‘The Commonwealth – A Global Partner.’
The Indian delegation to the 68th CPC is led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and includes Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, Harivansh Narayan, along with 36 Presiding Officers from 24 State and Union Territory Legislatures across India.
The conference serves as a premier platform for parliamentary dialogue, fostering cooperation and the exchange of ideas among Commonwealth nations. Throughout the conference, seven thematic workshops are being held, focusing on contemporary global and governance issues.
The CPA conference aims to strengthen democratic institutions, promote good governance, and encourage parliamentary diplomacy to address shared global challenges. It underscores the Commonwealth’s collective commitment to advancing inclusive and sustainable development through cooperation and shared democratic values.
