The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) unit of Jaiñtia Hills has claimed that Assam is encroaching on land 3km within Meghalaya territory to build a university in the area.
In a petition to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today, HITO said that Assam is looking to construct a university in Lum Siatmuid in West Jaintia Hills.
On May 31, representatives from Assam, following instructions of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council’s Chief Executive Member, Tuliram Ronghang, and others inspected the land in question without prior intimation to the Meghalaya government or district administration, HITO said.
“We urge the government of Meghalaya to act on the matter at the earliest to avoid any untoward incident,” the pressure group said, adding that it is high time for the government to raise its voice against such illegal encroachment of land by Assam.
