Shillong, Jun 27: In the backdrop of the resignation of Mawkyrwat Member of District Council (MDC) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Pynkhrawborlin Kharjahrin from the Executive Committee (EC), Voice of the People Party (VPP) president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit alleged that since the party took over the reins in the council there have been attempts to unseat the party from the EC.
“This is the biggest reason to weaken the VPP and every trick is being used,” Basaiawmoit said.
The VPP president said this is a propaganda of the opposition and it is their aspiration that if they can remove the EC in the KHADC it will be a move to weaken the party before the Assembly election in 2028.
The VPP chief also informed that there have been attempts to lure the MDCs with money, adding that he was glad to know that they rejected the offers since they understood that they fought the elections on principles, to serve the people with utmost sincerity.
However, the VPP chief said the party MDCs know how they were elected to serve the people and the principles of the party are in their psyche since it was their decision to join the party and be part of that belief.
He said the VPP is different from other political parties wherein there has been an effort to change the thinking and bring a new political culture.
Basaiawmoit said other political parties are still clinging on to the old ways of doing politics and therefore they still have that mindset that once a person resigns for them it means there is something amiss or the individual is against the party.
He however stated that in the VPP it is not like that and pointed out that when former Chief Executive Member (CEM) Shemborlang Rynjah resigned due to health reasons, other parties jumped to the conclusion that there may be internal squabbles within the party.
The VPP president stated that similarly in the latest development where Kharjahrin resigned as EC member, the opposition parties are at it again.
Basaiawmoit pointed out that in the VPP a post is not something that a member would cling to. “For us, a post is a responsibility to streamline things and when the party thinks about how to organise the works ahead we can take any decisions,” he added.
Meanwhile, he informed that recently all the MDCs of the KHADC in a show of unity met along with other party members to address rumours being spread by the opposition that there is internal dissension in the VPP.
“All the 18 MDCs are firm in their resolve to be with the VPP and we are going about our business in the usual manner,” Basaiawmoit added.
