The A’chik Organisation for Social Welfare (AOSW) has written to the Sub-Divisional School Education Officer of Williamnagar calling for a more transparent teacher recruitment process in East Garo Hills.
In a letter dated today, the AOSW said that recruitment has, on a number of times, been irregular.
It pointed to one alleged example, Rongrong Union Deficit Upper Primary School, where last year the pressure group claimed that a woman had been appointed as assistant teacher without having passed the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET).
Although complaints were raised by the AOSW in July last year regarding the case, no answer has been forthcoming to explain how the assistant teacher was appointed over other candidates, who had passed the MTET and met other requirements.
Furthermore, the AOSW said that, in recent months, three teachers have retired at the school but their replacements have yet to be appointed, leaving the students “idle and blind”.
“Such kind of negligence by the concerned authorities affects the future of the students and also affects society. There is a surplus number of educated and qualified candidates to fill these vacuums immediately,” the letter said while calling for MTET-passed teachers to be given preference.
