Shillong, Apr 12: In the second such raid in a fortnight, police arrested 16 people suspected to be involved in solicitation and causing nuisance in the city centre last night.
The operation, which started at around 11:30pm on Saturday night, was led by Additional SP (Traffic) Lovish Garg and SDPO Pynursla B Wanswet, along with other police personnel.
A very similar raid took place on March 28 where, again, 16 people had been apprehended. The round-up covered Police Bazaar, the area around the English Service Presbyterian Church, IGP Point and other busy public spaces.
According to police, the action followed multiple complaints from residents about obscene behaviour, solicitation and disturbances in these areas. During the raid, individuals were allegedly found engaging in prostitution and approaching passersby through gestures and direct solicitation.
All 16 individuals were taken into custody and police cases registered.
