Days after the State government decided to give additional 1.4 acres of land in addition to the existing 2.14 acres at the Shillong Municipal Board complex here as part of relocation of 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) said the decision of the government was unreasonable.
“We strongly oppose the steps taken by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to unreasonably allot large tracts of land to accommodate the residents of the Them Iew Mawlong majority of who illegally reside on the government land. The party has no objection if the State government accommodates its employees in the government quarters while in service. Allotment of government land to ordinary citizens is incomprehensible and outside the boundary of law,” the VPP said today.
Recalling that the State government in the recent past had taken a conscious decision not to allot any revenue land to any private entities, the VPP said that through the latest decision the government took a completely contrasting decision in this case.
“Let the MDA government cite an instance where it allots revenue land to the landless people of the State who badly require land for residence? Has any government in the past ever allotted land or even official quarters to the descendants of employees employed by the State government? The people of the State deserve a plausible explanation from the State government,” the party added.
