The Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) held its general meeting here today to decide their next course of action concerning their demands for the upgradation of ad hoc schools to the deficit system and enhancement of salaries.
The teachers had planned on holding a rally but were dissuaded after they failed to obtain prior permission from the authorities.
FASTOM threatened to launch an indefinite strike from April 1 if the government fails to heed the teachers’ demands.
Currently, a lower primary school teacher is paid Rs 12,000 per month, upper primary teachers Rs 16,000, secondary level teachers Rs 20,000 and higher secondary teachers Rs 24,000 without any allowances. There are over 7,090 teachers in 860 ad hoc schools in the state.
According to the association, the last increment they received was in 2016.
