The Seng Samla Shnong (SSS), Umkiang has offered its support to the family of lawyer and social activist Kynjaimon Amse in their demand for an investigation into his death in a road accident.
Amse, a resident of Umkiang died in a road accident at Dkhiah in East Jaintia Hills District on August 22. His family members have alleged that there could be more to the accident and are demanding a detailed investigation into the case.
SSS president Ellend Mynthlu said Amse has contributed towards the welfare of the village and supported the youth organisation and the community. He said the unexpected death of Amse is a loss not only to the family but the community. .
Amse was seen as an outspoken lawyer who took on the government and others in power and stood up for the villages that were deprived of roads, healthcare, mobile phone connections, etc. He had also filed a case against the central government and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the abysmal condition of National Highway 6 as it passes from Ratacherra to Lumshnong.
A week before the incident, the lawyer had filed a complaint with the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) against the issuance of a no-objection certificate (NOC) to Meghatop Cement Pvt Ltd for setting up a cement plant in Wahiajer village without the consent of the Dorbar Elaka Narpuh. He had threatened to drag the JHADC to court if the NOC was not terminated.
A FIR has been lodged with police in Khliehriat by the family who suspects foul play in his death.
While Amse was pronounced dead that the site, three other occupants, including the driver Fullmoon Nongtdu of Khliehriat, Raja L Suchen and Small Lamin, both of Huroi village sustained injuries.
