The A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) has begun holding awareness campaigns on its demand for Tura to be named as the winter capital of Meghalaya.
A round of campaigns was held with six A’king Nokmas, a press release stated yesterday.
Speaking on the occasion, the ACHIK general secretary, Advocate Bernita R Marak, also clarified on the state’s job reservation policy and the emergence of the roster system as a verdict of the Meghalaya High Court. She spoke about the cut-off date of the roster system and why the Garo community needs to stand together on the issue of retrospective application of the system.
The issue of the winter capital was also brought up by ACHIK education secretary Macklowrence M Sangma, wherein he said that the demand is not a new one but had been ignored for several decades. On this issue, he also called for unity among the Garo people and all those living in Garo Hills.
Meanwhile, support for the demand was received today from the Tura Government College Students’ Union. A “rift” between the major tribes of Meghalaya could be resolved with Tura being made the winter capital as this would expose the people of the eastern part of Meghalaya to Garo Hills, TGCSU president Anand Ch Momin said.
