The Meghalaya unit of the right-wing students’ organisation, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), today released a poster to encourage Meghalayans to vote at the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
Meghalaya will go to the polls on April 19.
Although the ABVP has strong links to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ostensible aim of this voter awareness campaign is to boost turnout.
The release of the poster took place at the ABVP state office here. At the launch was ABVP national media convenor Ashutosh Singh, central working committee member Nibiang Sumer, ABVP Meghalaya state secretary Tengku M Marak, state joint secretary Bam Singh and Shillong city secretary Fellinika Dkhar.
Under this voter awareness campaign, students of the state under the leadership of ABVP will organise various programmes, including distribution of informative pamphlets and hold small seminars in all the districts of Meghalaya. This campaign will be run in East and West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills and Ri-Bhoi.
Singh said that the ABVP will make young voters aware of the use of their voting rights, especially as more than half of eligible voters are young people.
Marak said that ABVP is excited about the voter awareness campaign among the voters of Meghalaya. “Democracy is a festival for us and we will try through our campaign that more and more people come forward to vote in this election and become aware of the power of their vote,” he was quoted as saying.
