A day after the Assam government conducted an eviction drive along the inter-state border with Meghalaya, about five displaced illegal settlers have reportedly found refuge in the State.
The Byrnihat circle and 15 Mer unit of the Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP) visited the area today and pushed them away stating that they have moved into Meghalaya and set up shops without permission from local village authorities.
FKJGP district unit vice president Lumlang Mawnai and circle organising secretary, Kitbor Suting said that they found more than five illegal settlers who were evicted from Assam who have set up shops.
Yesterday, hundreds of shops and houses have been destroyed by the Assam government over alleged illegal occupation of government land along the Assam-Meghalaya border road from Jorabat to Byrnihat.
The FKJGP has expressed concern over the eviction drive and urged village authorities not to accommodate such settlers or allow them to rent homes in areas under their jurisdiction.
