Tura MDC Bernard N Marak has alleged that there is a conspiracy to abolish the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) by politicians in Garo Hills, including several sitting MDCs.
The GHADC has been struggling financially for years, with staff unpaid for 42 months now.
Marak, a trenchant critic of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) whether at the state level or district council, claimed today that the current crisis in the GHADC is the culmination of an agenda to eliminate the GHADC altogether.
He stated that a veteran politician in Garo Hills is behind the move and has the support of several ruling party MDCs.
The non-payment of salaries to GHADC employees for 42 months has been cited as a deliberate attempt to portray the council as corrupt and inept. Marak emphasised that this has severely impacted the lives of thousands of people.
Marak criticised the GHADC executive members for failing to address issues related to the misuse of funds, loss of revenue and the transfer of income-generating departments to the state government.
The Tura MDC highlighted that crores of rupees allocated by the central government, in addition to the council’s funds, have vanished, likely due to misappropriation or misuse.
Marak concluded that the failure of the ruling MDCs should serve as a wake-up call for the people of Garo Hills, as the council is not only failing but is being deliberately destroyed.
