MTET pass percentage jumps 7-fold after reforms

The pass percentage for Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) 2025 takers has jumped by around seven times from the dismal 2023 figures, the Education Department revealed today.

The state government has patted itself on the back for this, claiming that “research-driven” reforms have led to the success.

This year, 61.56 per cent of MTET lower primary test takers passed, compared to 8.11 per cent in 2023. The pass percentage for MTET upper primary test takers jumped from 9.27 per cent to 63.23 per cent in the same period.

In the lower primary category there were 13,940 candidates this year out of which 8,581 passed. In the upper primary category, 7,674 candidates out of 12,136 sitters passed.

“Recognising the extremely low pass rates of MTET 2023, the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT) examination cell undertook a systematic review of the assessment framework, guided by a team of faculty having experience in student measurement and assessments,” the department stated in a release.

The interventions included a competency-based syllabus redesign, which shifted from content-heavy testing to National Education Policy (NEP) 2020-aligned competencies, emphasising classroom knowledge and application over rote recall, etc.

Pass rates were low in 2019 and 2021 but reached their nadir in 2023. Previously, the pass rate was just 16.29 per cent and 15.40 per cent in the lower primary section in 2019 and 2021 respectively. The percentages were higher in the upper primary section, with 20.12 per cent recorded in 2019 and 26.20 per cent in 2021.
