The central government has approved the Rs 951.27 crore Tura Bypass project, which is aimed at decongesting Tura town and improving road safety.
The go-ahead for the 29.03km bypass was announced by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on social media today. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma quickly responded with a tweet of his own to thank Gadkari and the Prime Minister.
The bypass will connect National Highway 127B to NH-217 and will be built to a two-lane standard with paved shoulders.
NH-217 serves as the principal artery linking Guwahati to Dalu, which lies on the international border with Bangladesh and functions as an inland customs check-post.
The proposed bypass will commence near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and terminate at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217.
“It is designed to circumvent the current alignment of NH-217, which traverses the densely developed and heavily congested urban core of Tura town, where narrow road widths and substantial traffic volumes impede mobility,” Gadkari tweeted. “This infrastructure will not only alleviate congestion within Tura but also enhance road safety by segregating local traffic from through traffic.”
