In the run up to World Environment Day the North Eastern Regional Centre, Zoological Survey of India, Shillong organised an event among all the staff under one of the thrust areas of, “Promoting development of sustainable alternatives to single use plastic” on Friday.
The programme is part of the nationwide campaign of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, “One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution”. This campaign highlights India’s unwavering commitment to environmental protection and sustainability, aligned with India’s flagship initiative—Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).
Senior Scientist Uttam Saikia spoke about the history of use of plastic and the hazards caused by it and the ways people can mitigate it.
The Mission LiFE pledged was administered by Dr. Bikramjit Sinha, Nodal Officer, Meri LiFE campaign of the centre among the staff to sensitise about environment-friendly habits.
During the interactive session, the staff of the centre shared views and thoughts to reduce plastic pollution, such as reducing the use of small plastic bottles in daily life, reducing use of plastic materials in office programmes and field surveys, and installation of public drinking water facilities in market areas of Shillong, tourists sensitisation about plastic pollution, reducing use of plastic bottles during train journeys, returning used polythene bags to nearby shops for re-use were some of the major suggestion and commitment put forward by the staff of the centre.
Cloth bags were also distributed among all the staff of the centre for everyday use.
Officer-in-Charge of ZSI, Shillong Jennifer Lyngdoh was also present at the programme.
