Power Minister AT Mondal today informed that Meghalaya is now generating surplus electricity and earning revenue by selling the excess through the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX).
He clarified that the sale of surplus power is part of a well-planned strategy and is being carried out in a completely transparent manner. “All transactions are conducted via the Indian Energy Exchange. There is nothing opaque or alarming about it,” he assured.
Explaining the rationale, Mondal stated, “We generate power based on our requirements. If there’s excess, letting it go to waste provides no benefit. Instead, by selling it, we generate revenue which can later be used to purchase power during peak demand periods. It’s a practical and transparent system.”
Addressing concerns about the visibly low water levels in Umiam Dam, the minister clarified that the drop is not due to leakage or structural issues. “We had stored water in anticipation of the dry season, fearing a possible power shortage. But when rains arrive suddenly, the reservoir overflows and we are forced to open the gates,” he explained.
He added that generating and selling power from this excess water creates valuable resources for the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL), enabling the state to secure power during lean periods.
“Meghalaya is currently in a stable position in terms of energy requirements. The surplus generation allows us to earn revenue which can be reinvested to meet future power demands. It’s a win-win approach,” Mondal concluded.
