The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress has written to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to raise its concern regarding the availability of pornography to the youth of the state, which, it said, is “directly contributing” to the alarming rise in cases of sexual abuse against young girls, particularly by young boys.
“Day by day, we are witnessing a disturbing trend where minors are engaging in harmful and inappropriate behaviour, often influenced by the easy availability of explicit material online,” state Mahila Congress president Joplyn S Shylla said in the letter. “This not only endangers the safety and dignity of girls across the state but also reflects a moral crisis that must be addressed collectively and immediately.”
She urged the state government to enforce stricter rules on accessing pornography, “especially on mobile and digital platforms”, introduce state-level digital safety campaigns in schools and communities, work with law enforcement to monitor and take swift action against the spread of pornography and promote awareness programmes to educate both youth and parents on the psychological and social consequences of pornography.
“We believe that timely and effective intervention can help prevent further damage to the social fabric of our society and ensure a safer environment for our children, especially our girls,” Shylla said, adding that the Mahila Congress will support any effort the government takes in this direction.
