A victim of sustained long-term domestic violence is receiving treatment in Shillong Civil Hospital after the latest round of brutalisation by her husband.
In a case that demonstrates that Meghalaya still has a long way to go to end crimes against women, the 26-year-old was brutally assaulted by her husband, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.
The Meghalaya State Commission for Women has taken cognisance of the crime and the victim was visited by the commission’s Chairperson, Iamonlang Syiem, today. Syiem assured that the women’s commission will follow up on the case to ensure that justice is served.
The victim’s mother has lodged an FIR at Mawngap police station against her son-in-law.
According to Syiem, the victim had been suffering at the hands of her abusive husband for years, highlighting the need for timely intervention and support for victims of domestic violence.
The victim, who was left with severe bruises, recounted her horrific experiences, stating that her husband would beat her and threaten to kill her and their child whenever he returned home drunk. Furthermore, she alleged that her husband is having an extramarital affair with another woman.

Meanwhile, another brutal attack on a woman was reported today from South West Khasi Hills.
Authorities informed that information was received at around 3pm that a suspect, identified as Jacinth Sanglyne, had physically assaulted a woman, Tophibet Pariong (26), and slit her throat. Police from Ranikor rushed to the location and apprehended Sanglyne from his village of Nongnah, Nongkdait.
The weapon, a knife, used in the attack was also found at the victim’s residence in Thangrai Nongnah. The woman was rushed to Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital and underwent surgery.
A case has been registered at Mawkyrwat Women police station. Police did not clarify the relationship, if any, between the perpetrator and victim or the motive behind the attack.
