The Shella unit of the Hynniewtrep Youths; Council (HYC) apprehended four individuals suspected to be Bangladeshis in Shella village, located near the Indo-Bangladesh border in East Khasi Hills.
The four suspects were apprehended from the Dalia locality, adjacent to the border fence with Bangladesh, early this morning. When questioned, they claimed to be tourists but failed to provide satisfactory answers about their stay in the area and where they were staying.
Clouding the matter was that the four did produce Indian identification documents, like EPIC, PAN card and Aadhaar, with Nagaon district in Assam given as their address. However, the pressure group, which had taken it upon itself to carry out this checking, claimed that there were inconsistencies in the IDs. “One suspect had two EPICs with different names, issued on the same date, while another had a photograph of Bangladeshi currency on his phone,” HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem claimed.
The four suspects have been handed over to Shella police station and an investigation is underway to determine their nationality and the authenticity of their documents.
Synrem also emphasized the statement of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who stated that there is large-scale immigration of infiltrators through West Bengal, possessing genuine EPIC cards and other documents.
“What is concerning is that these illegal immigrants are now entering India with genuine Indian documents,” Synrem added.
