A 5-month old baby was rescued from a coal pit at Khloo Chongwar in Khliehriat, police said today.
The incident happened on March 8 and came to light after a video of the rescue carried out by people went viral.
Police said acting on the video, it was learnt that the baby was thrown into the abandoned pit by a “mentally unstable” mother, who is said to be residing temporarily at some residential camps in Khliehriat area.
Reportedly the woman is originally from Nangbah village, West Jaintia Hills.
According to police, the baby was spotted by some villagers at around 11 pm who launched a rescue. After rescuing the baby, the villagers then took the baby to Khliehriat Civil Hospital for treatment. From there the baby was referred to Ialong CH, Jowai and then to NEIGRIHMS for further treatment, police said.
While no information was received at any police station till date from any individual except through the video circulating in social media police have launched an enquiry into the matter.
