The Election Commission (EC) has initiated a nationwide exercise to address concerns over duplicate voter ID cards and discrepancies in voters’ lists.
Thirty-six Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs), 788 District Election Officers (DEOs), and 4,123 Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) are holding meetings with political parties, both national and state-level, to resolve pending poll-related issues.
These meetings, scheduled to conclude by March 31, aim to address concerns regarding electoral rolls, election photo ID cards, and other aspects of polls.
According to the ECI, these meetings are currently taking place within the legal framework of the RP Act 1950 and 1951, Registration of Elector Rules 1960, Conduct of Election Rules 1961, and the manuals, guidelines and instructions issued by the poll panel on regular intervals.
The initiative follows a directive from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, issued during the conference of CEOs from all states and UTs held earlier this month in New Delhi.
The ECI stressed on the critical role of political parties and their authorised representatives such as Booth Level Agents (BLAs), Polling Agents, Counting Agents and Election Agents in various electoral processes including the conduct of elections.
“This grassroots-level engagement has been welcomed by political parties, with their active and enthusiastic participation in meetings across assembly constituencies, districts, and states/UTs,” it added.
The commission has appealed to all political parties to avail this proactive grassroot level engagement with electoral authorities for resolving any pending issue in a time-bound manner.
