Congress leader Ronnie V. Lyngdoh has expressed concerns over the appointment of unqualified individuals stating affiliation to political parties by such persons have lowered the standards of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
“Universities should be centres of excellence, not places that accommodate individuals affiliated with political parties, regardless of their qualifications. Just because someone belongs to a political party does not justify their appointment. This compromises the standards of education at NEHU,” he stated recently.
Lyngdoh emphasised that there should be no compromises made regarding the integrity of educational institutions simply due to political affiliations.
“We stand with the students. I have informally discussed this issue with our MP, Saleng Sangma, who has assured me that he will take it up with the relevant authorities in India,” he added.
Lyngdoh mentioned that Congress MPs will also raise the matter in Parliament and with the pertinent Ministry, stressing that NEHU, as the only central university in the state, cannot afford such compromises.
He stated that it is evident that the quality of education at NEHU has been undermined.
The Tura MP had on Friday written to Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan requesting immediate intervention in addressing grievances in the university.
According to Sangma, the wellbeing and educational environment in the university has been severely impacted by a series of actions under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor PS Shukla.
