To mark the celebration of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) 150 years of service to the nation, the Meteorological Centre Shillong organised a one-day stakeholder workshop on ‘Weather and Climate Service’ here today.
The chief guest was Matsiewdor War Nongbri, Secretary of Revenue and Disaster Management, in the presence of M Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, IMD, KN Mohan, Head of the Regional Meteorological Centre Guwahati, AC Lyngdoh, Head of the Central Seismological Observatory and Thangjalal Lhouvum, Head of the Meteorological Centre Shillong.
The workshop was attended by senior IMD officers from RMC Guwahati, AMS Barapani and MO Sohra, officers and staff from MC Shillong and various stakeholders from central and state government along with various agencies, institutes and Dorbar Shnong of Mawsynram.
Mohapatra introduced Mawsynram as the world’s rainiest place and discussed about the evolution of the IMD since 1875 and current status of weather and climate services of IMD and the recently launched Mausamgram for location forecast of weather up to 10 days for a specific location based on the search option available – location, pincode, gram panchayat and latitude-longitude. He also talked about the impact of weather on various sectors and the improvement in the forecasting services of IMD for the public as well as for different sectoral applications.
War Nongbri then inaugurated the recently installed Automatic Weather Station at Mawsynram. During her speech, she appreciated the Meteorological Centre Shillong for its constant support and all-weather services for Meghalaya and she congratulated the IMD for 150 years of service to the nation.
The inaugural session was followed by a technical session with presentations from IMD scientists with a question and answer session.
