Garo Hills Youth Solidarity (GHYS) has raised concerns over the safety of female students in the Williamnagar Girls’ Nursing hostel due to absence of a boundary wall.
The group met with the East Garo Hills District and Medical Health Officer to discuss the matter.
GHYS general secretary Eric Bunty Marak said the hostel is surrounded by a jungle, making it vulnerable to potential threats and risks in the absence of a boundary wall.
“Women safety in the present generation is widely discussed everywhere nowadays. It has now become a major issue and the crime rate is on the spike. This happens to be girl students who are not secure in the hostel. However, this fear cannot keep them away from the responsibility of the district authorities,” he said.
Seeking proper safety measures for the students, Marak also urged the district authorities to take immediate action to address the concerns to install a boundary concrete wall, entrance gate around the hostel premises to prevent night encounters and from any other dangers as well as installation of CCTVs and appointment of security guards at the earliest.
