The East Jaiñtia Hills District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has cautioned the public of broken bridges along the National Highway 6 under Lumshnong C&RD Block.
Informing that the bridges in Umkiang (Wahkoh) and all other bridges are in dilapidated condition, the Deputy Commissioner and chairman of the DDMA said these bridges can pose an imminent danger to the public and transport.
“Commuters and drivers are advised to take necessary precautions and to obey the traffic Regulations while crossing through the said bridges in order to avoid any untoward incident till completion of works by the concerned department of NH-6,” the public notice said.
In the meantime, the DDMA has also directed the Project Director, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to take immediate restorative measures in light of the critical importance of the bridges.
The NHAI has also been asked to set up warning signages in all the bridges for night visibility and safety of the commuters.
The DDMA in a letter to the NHAI said it should immediately take up the restorative measures as provided under Section 34 (m) of Disaster Management Act, 2005 and said “accountability and liability” will solely depend upon its action.
