Another seven people were killed in South Garo Hills after incessant rainfall led to landslides and floods in various parts of the Garo Hills region, taking the toll to 10.

The victims are from Hatiasia Songma village identified as Silji R Marak (60), Merina R Marak (39), Sama N. Sangma (50), Chengbe R Marak (22) and her one year old daughter Dimse R Marak, Desrang R Marak (14) and Silbera R Marak (8).

NDRF team is carrying out the search and rescue operation in the area.

All five districts of Garo Hills have been affected. Yesterday, three deaths were reported in Dalu, West Garo Hills.

According to officials, 4954 people and 330 households in 54 villages have been affected by floods and landslides. Ten animals were also reported dead.  Many roads have also been cut off by landslides, especially in West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills districts.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reviewed the flood situation this morning and directed the district administrations to seek any assistance from the government and ensure relief work is carried out in the affected areas.

A statement issued by the chief minister’s office said the incessant rains since Friday midnight caused flood in Dalu area as well as the plains belt of West Garo Hills. Gasuapara in South Garo Hills is also badly affected, where a bridge has been washed away.

Directions were given to identify alternative routes to restore road communication in Dalu – Baghmara area.

The Chief Minister has also directed that the wooden bridges that have been washed away and damaged should be rebuilt. He has recommended Bailey bridge technology for the construction and that all identified wooden bridges will be replaced with new constructions.

“Officials have informed that electricity will be restored in most parts of the region by today. The CM has directed that all efforts should be made to ease public life and ensure adequate relief operation. He has asked administration to be on a high alert and continuously monitor the situation,” the statement said.
