The Trinamool Congress has today officially named Sadhiarani Sangma as the party’s candidate for the upcoming by-election from Gambegre constituency.
Sadhiarani is the wife of former minister Zenith M. Sangma. She is also an MDC from Dengnakpara constituency in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
She contested the 2023 Assembly election from Gambegre but lost to Saleng Sangma of Congress by a margin of 2871 votes.
Earlier, the ruling NPP had nominated Mehtab Chandee Sangma as the candidate for the by-election. Mehtab is the wife of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
Moreover, the State Congress has selected Jingjang M. Marak as the candidate for the by-poll and his name is awaiting approval by the party high command.
Marak was the only applicant for Congress ticket. He is also a close aide of former Gambegre MLA Saleng A. Sangma.
The by-election to Gambegre seat was necessitated by the resignation of Saleng Sangma after his election as the MP from Tura parliamentary seat.
The Election Commission is yet to announce the date for the by-election although there are indications that it may be held in October this year.
